Residential building in Sestriere

Description

The building is located close to the Thirties “white” tower, in front of ski slopes.

The project stress the importance of the “orientation” of the house in relation to the landscape (both natural and architectural). The position on a curve of the road that goes down to the  valley suggests an asymmetrical composition: a bow window in the south-east corner is the focus of the building and acts as a visual joint. From here, long horizontal balconies mark the south facade and direct the eye towards the valley.

The use of this curved element helps to alter the uniformity of the residential block, but in the meanwhile it is a way to find a relationship with the forms of the nearby houses of the Thirties. The north front appears as a close volume delimited by white walls with regular openings: a volume broken only in the middle, where a wooden wall (partially forming a brise soleil structure) lines the interior staircases and reveals the entrance hall and the distributive space. The building progressively “opens” towards south through a continuous wooden skin enclosing the window shutters, a skin that acts as a filter between the living spaces of the flats and the surrounding landscape.
